My Lady Jane
By Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, Jodi Meadows
Genre: YA Historical Fantasy Fiction
Recommended Ages: 15+
Edward (long live the king) is the King of England. He’s also dying, which is inconvenient, as he’s only sixteen and he’d much rather be planning for his first kiss than considering who will inherit his crown…
Jane (reads too many books) is Edward’s cousin, and far more interested in books than romance. Unfortunately for Jane, Edward has arranged to marry her off to secure the line of succession. And there’s something a little odd about her intended…
Gifford (call him G) is a horse. That is, he’s an Eðian (eth-y-un, for the uninitiated). Every day at dawn he becomes a noble chestnut steed—but then he wakes at dusk with a mouthful of hay. It’s all very undignified.
The plot thickens as Edward, Jane, and G are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy. With the fate of the kingdom at stake, our heroes will have to engage in some conspiring of their own. But can they pull off their plan before it’s off with their heads?
The Gist
I didn’t really have an idea of what I was getting into when I started this book. I vaugely knew what it was about and knew people liked it. Turns out, IT’S FREAKING AMAZING! Number 1, the writing is some of the best I’ve seen in the past couple years. Number 2, the story was so good it had me researching the nine-day Queen Jane of England to learn more. It’s a wonderfully entertaining story with well-defined and vivid characters. A truly enjoyable, hilarious, and witty read I’d recommend to anyone.
What I Liked:
The writing. It was so good. Specifically the way they portrayed the characters emotions. They were extreme and funny and realistic and everything I could want in a character. I felt everything the characters felt.
It’s always a risk adding a fantasy element to a historical story, but the way they weaved the Ethian element in was masterful. It didn’t feel out of place and added extra excitment to the story.
There was never a dull moment in the story either. Once it started, it kept going and kept building. And it was funny! I wasn’t expecting to laugh so much during this book but I did! This is seriously a great book and one I think most everyone will enjoy reading. Gosh these authors are dripping clever wit!
What I Didn’t Like:
I think the only part I didn’t really like was that after a while the whole narrator breaking in for some disclaimer type of thing got a tad annoying. But it honestly didn’t upset me that much, and I don’t feel like it ruined the flow of the story.
