Legendary (Caraval #2)
By Stephanie Garber
Genre: YA Fantasy
Recommended Ages: 17+
A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.
After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.
The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.
The Gist:
This. Book. Was. Amazing.
I loved Caraval way more than I thought I would, and I loved Legendary even more! It’s from Tella’s point of view and she is just one of the most interesting characters I’ve read in a long time. It’s fast-paced, unique and engaging plot, and the descriptions and world-building are phenonmenal. The only thing I thought about during the two weeks it took to read this book was “When can I read Legendary?” An inventive story with colorful descriptions that will draw you in immediately.
What I Liked:
This book made me adore Tella. I always get nervous when I book changes character point of views (and a little annoyed) but I actually liked seeing the world through Tella’s eyes more. She got such a fun attitude. Doesn’t take crap from anyone yet also deeply cares about her mother and sister.
I didn’t like Dante in this book. I LOVED HIM. That’s all I’ll say. I don’t want to risk spoiling the experience of getting to know him for you.
Stephanie knocked the plot out of the park in this book. So often the reason I love a book and have to keep reading is because I adore the main romantic couple and want to see what happens with them. And while that certainly is there, I was so drawn in by the plot and the Fates in this book that I kept reading because I had to know more about them.
But what Stephanie does best in my humble opinion is description. She doesn’t just describe settings, colors, sound, smell, and anything else well, she describes it differently. And not in some obscure way that makes no sense, but in a way that I know EXACTLY what she’s trying to get me to see, taste, feel. It honestly inspires me in my own writing. All this allows for a crazy cool world to be built and observed through the pages of her books. Her top notch descriptions have me dying to visit the worlds she creates. Can someone please build a Caraval theme park????
What I Didn’t Like:
Nothing. I honestly can’t think of one thing I didn’t like. Seriously.
