The Jist

Obsidian is a great YA novel and a truly enjoyable read. The alien angle had me worried at first, but it never seemed cheesy or weird. It’s got all the teen angst and tension you hope for.  I likened it to Twilight, but much better. The writing was well-paced and expressive and not weighed down by excessive adjectives and descriptions.

What I Liked

The back and forth between Katy and Daemon is perfection. The relationship between Katy and Daemon was never rushed or over the top. It flowed well and made a natural progression. I appreciated that Katy didn’t allow herself to get caught up too much in the incredible hottness that is Daemon (side note: how come guys that hott never went to my school?) So many scenes with the two of them made my heart race, which is a good sign. And I loved their back and forth. So often I think authors can try too hard with witty banter to the point that it’s annoying, but Jennifer never crossed that line in my opinion. Wanting to know what happened between the two of them really keeps the book moving forward. I also appreciated how she didn’t end the book with a huge cliffhanger, but I also found myself dying to know what happens with Katy and Daemon.

What I Didn’t Like

I fully admit my biggest dislike is probably purely personal opinion, but it essentially felt like Twilight with aliens instead of vampires for a lot of the book, and I wasn’t a huge fan of Twilight. It was much better writing than Twilight, but I wish it would have felt a little more unique besides the alien angle.

My Rating: 4/5 Lunas
