The Power of Six (Lorien Legacies #2)

I’ve seen him on the news. Followed the stories about what happened in Ohio. John Smith, out there, on the run. To the world, he’s a mystery. But to me . . . he’s one of us.

Nine of us came here, but sometimes I wonder if time has changed us—if we all still believe in our mission. How can I know? There are six of us left. We’re hiding, blending in, avoiding contact with one another . . . but our Legacies are developing, and soon we’ll be equipped to fight. Is John Number Four, and is his appearance the sign I’ve been waiting for? And what about Number Five and Six? Could one of them be the raven-haired girl with the stormy eyes from my dreams? The girl with powers that are beyond anything I could ever imagine? The girl who may be strong enough to bring the six of us together?

They caught Number One in Malaysia.

Number Two in England.

And Number Three in Kenya.

They tried to catch Number Four in Ohio—and failed.

I am Number Seven. One of six still alive.

The Gist:

A compelling and action-rich sequel to I Am Number Four. I enjoyed this second book slightly more than the first, which I guess is a good sign for the series. Like any good sequel, the stakes are higher and the book has a very different feel from its predecessor.  Before they were dreading the arrival of the Mogadorians. Now they are running from them. We see the group trying to survive life on the road. It made for a much more engaging read. Overall, a good follow up and lead up to the rest of series.

What I Liked:

With the Mogadorians hot on their trail for most of the book, there is much more intensity and suspense throughout, which did a much better job of holding my attention than the first book.

Six may be my new favorite characters. She is strong, confident, has a bit of an attitude, and not afraid to stand up for herself.  And I liked that it was her teaching the boys what to do. Even though the story is never narrated from her point of view, she still feels like the main character (kind of obvious given the name of the book).

It’s always nice when new characters are introduced to a story, especially when they new characters are good and dynamic. Not all the characters were this in my opinion, but there were a couple I was glad to see join the team.

I was glad to see the kids were attacked more. Sounds strange, but when they’re attacked, we get to see their legacies, and it reminds us that these kids are in serious danger. That is what makes me want to keep reading. So I thought this book did a much better job of that than the first. I also thought the writing was better in general.  Less of him telling me what things looked like and how people felt and more showing me.

What I Didn’t Like:

The alternate story line with Number Seven fell flat for me. I didn’t mind the characters but her storyline was boring for me. Just a lot of her sitting around feeling sorry for herself.

The love triangle bothered me at times in its predictability and cheesiness in a way. It felt shallow at times too, like Four would briefly mention feeling bad about it then be over it a second later. And I thought it was very strange how much Four and Sam talked about it with each other.
